One of the key challenges on the Internet is that law enforcement does hardly work on the Internet. This has different reasons: The legal frameworks – if they exist – are hardly aligned internationally but the criminals are. Law enforcement, even though they made great progress still has a hard time to work across the Globe. And last but definitely not least, figuring out who really is behind an attack is harder than ever.
US politics is starting to raise this as well: Obama warns of hackers creating cyber ‘Wild Wild West’ – even though I think the US is part of problem and could be part of the solution. But how could such a solution really look like? I have to admit that I do not know. In a panel years ago, we discussed that we would need an agreement and bodies similar to air and maritime services but this would mean to give up part of a country’s sovereignty.
