Remember the prediction we have seen in a lot of “what security brings us in 2016” that we will see failure of critical infrastructure due to security incidents. Well, it seems that news just waited for the year to turn 2016 to appear (not exactly, the US news appeared late December):
The US Power grid was compromised by somebody, allegedly by Iranians:
And then the outages in Ukraine:
Honestly, I am more surprised that not more happened so far than I am surprised that these things happened. Unfortunately we will see more and I guess this should bring us to the “resilience” question. How resilient are we as private person when power fails for a day (or even a few days)? How resilient is society? How resilient is our economy? This is the area where we have to get better. The head of our army once got bashed in press because he publically stated that he has a significant amount of water on stock in his basement. Maybe this is not the worst idea going forward.
